The Department of Defense has identified 3,079 American service members who have died since the start of the Iraq war. It confirmed the deaths of the following Americans yesterday:

CARRILLO, Alejandro, 22, Sgt., Marines; Los Angeles; First Marine Logistics Group, First Marine Expeditionary Force.

CONTE, Matthew G., 22, Hospitalman, Marines; Mogadore, Ohio; Third Marine Division.

ELLIOTT, Terry J., 34, Gunnery Sgt., Marines; Middleton, Tenn.; Third Marine Division.

SHANNON, Stephen D., 21, Cpl., Army; Guttenberg, Iowa; 397th Engineer Battalion.

SIGUA, William M., 21, Sgt., Army; Los Altos Hills, Calif.; 82nd Airborne Division.
